Working with Multiple Map Views

A single ArcGIS Pro project can include multiple maps, each containing different information.

The examples demonstrated in this tutorial began by creating a new project based on the Blank Map template, which includes one map view labeled "Map." That label is reflected in the Contents pane and at the top of the View pane.

TIP: If you are familiar with ArcMap, consider ArcGIS Pro's map view as analogous to ArcMap's data frame.

Renaming the default map

To rename the default map, select the map in the Contents pane, then click on its name. (Alternatively, you can use F2 with the name highlighted.) Once editable, type a new name.

The map is renamed "Demo 1" in the example below.

Creating a new map view

To create another map, click through Insert > New Map in the main menu. The new, empty map will appear as a tab at the top of the View pane.

The new map can be treated just as the default map by adding layers, renaming, etc. (It is renamed "Demo 2" in the example below.)

Use the tabs at the top of the View pane to switch between maps. The Contents pane reflects the active map.

Shortcut! Copy and paste layers between maps

Often within one project, it is useful to start an additional map with some of the layers already added to another of the project's maps. In addition to the other methods to add data, you can copy and paste layers between maps with the familiar ctrl+c and ctrl+v commands, or by right-clicking on a layer from one map and selecting Copy, and then right-clicking on the other map's name in the Contents pane and selecting Paste. You can even drag layers into a new map.

TIP: Copying and pasting layers will also copy/paste their symbology.
