Creating an Esri Feature Dataset

Included in this tutorial:

  • Accessing and using the Create Feature Dataset tool

  • Examining the results

Software version in examples: ArcGIS Pro 3.0.2

Tutorial Data: The tutorial includes demonstration with the Network Tutorial Data available here.

This tutorial walks through creating a feature dataset in ArcGIS Pro.

Access the Create Feature Dataset tool

Access the Create Feature Dataset tool to create a new feature dataset (within a geodatabase).

Option 1: From the Catalog Pane

Navigate to the geodatabase (where you will create the feature dataset) with the Catalog pane. There, right-click on the geodatabase’s name and click through New > Feature Dataset. This is demonstrated below. (The demonstrations in this tutorial illustrate right-clicks in yellow and left-clicks in magenta).

Option 2: From the Geoprocessing Pane

Alternatively, you can find the Create Feature Dataset tool from the Geoprocessing Pane by searching “Create Feature Dataset” or by clicking through Data Management Tools > Workspace > Create Feature Dataset under Toolboxes.

The Create Feature Dataset tool

There are only three input parameters to creating a feature dataset: its geodatabase location, its name, and its CRS. Remember that all feature classes stored within a feature dataset will have the same CRS.

In the demonstration below…

  • The output geodatabase was established by specifying this location in the Catalog pane to summon the tool (Option 1 above).

  • The Feature Dataset Name is specified.

  • The feature dataset’s Coordinate System is set to match that of the “streets_ped” layer within the current project.

To execute the tool, click Run.

Examining the Results

The new (but currently empty) will be visible in your Catalog pane, within the geodatabase specified in the inputs.
